The Singularity

My son, Evan, has a birthday this week. He’s a long, lean, lanky teen with a keen interest in Sun Tzu, astrophysics, and….junk food. Like many teenagers, his appetite is, well, cosmic 😆

To commemorate this stage of his life, I wrote a poem for Evan that describes his appetite in terms of astrophysics. “The Singularity” will be in my upcoming book, Above the Rain. Happy birthday, Evan!

The Singularity

My teenage son’s fingertips
are an event horizon
from whose bourn none return—
Pizza, pizza, and MORE pizza,
eggs and bacon,
bacon burgers and fries,
syrup, soda, chips, and Cheez-Its—
galaxies of grub in his gut’s gravity
vanish in a vacuum
without so much as a sucking sound
(‘cause not even sound can escape).
