Remember?

My birthday is this month. I’ve never been one to dwell on (or act) my age, but since hitting my 50s there are ways my age is unavoidable: chronic aches (physically and emotionally), new (and unpleasant) routine medical procedures, and an awareness of how much is behind me (versus in front of me).

Last week I had a bout of nostalgia and decided to capture it in verse. “Remember?” is a semi-formal poem that will be in my upcoming book, Above the Rain. I say “semi-formal” because, while it adheres to no standard structure, it is metered…sort of like the passing of time.

Remember?

Remember the lithe green springboard leaves
of early May? The breeze would bound and bounce
from them through skies as blue and wide as kittens’
eyes, now shut tight by stony clouds from which
the waning year wrings a feeble rain.
