Just Because

Since it’s nearly Valentine’s Day (or “Singles Awareness Day” as my daughter calls it), I thought it apropos to post a poem I wrote for my wife a few years ago. “Just Because” appeared in my second book, Event Horizon. And whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or Singles Awareness Day, I wish you a happy one 😉❤️

Just Because
for Carrie

Just because
you stuffed a sky-scraping bite
of wedding cake in my mouth

Just because
you forgive
when the shards of my
broken self
draw blood

Just because
your lips are full
and soft

Just because
you hug me with God’s arms

Just because
I never tasted art
before I ate your food

Just because
you gave our daughter an open hand
and our son a joke book soul
when I could not

Just because
it’s not our anniversary,
Christmas,
or your birthday

I’m writing this
to you, love

just because.
