Forevermore

My wife and I did the math the other day, and found we’ve been Valentines for 27 years or so. Over the years, I’ve given her a poem or two on Valentine’s Day. This year I had no plan to but yesterday morning, I was inspired and dashed off the frolic below. More than likely, this poem will show up in my next book, A Song of Glass.

Forevermore

For weeks we’ve seen him
on our way to church:
an oil-slick raven perched
on a street light
near the freeway.

Today—Valentine’s Day—
I saw our raven on his lamp again
but with a friend, a Lenore
turning his Nevermore
to forevermore.

And if, nuzzling beaks,
they silhouette a black heart
against the morning’s blushing sky,
I know the blood it pumps is warm,
the same as yours and mine.
