Resurrection

In the next few months, I hope to self-publish my next book, Voiceless Choirs: Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. Every book I’ve put out is important to me since it represents a season of writing; each contains poems I’ve labored and agonized over, some of which I particularly love. But the poems in Voiceless Choirs are, in my opinion, some of my very best. I also asked my friend Noah Fultz to design the cover rather than doing it myself (which was fine except I’m a poet, not a graphic designer, LOL).

“Resurrection” is a more recent poem I added to Voiceless Choirs and falls into the “spiritual songs” category. It’s a playful meditation on resurrection and the defeat of death through Jesus.

Resurrection

Resurrection
insurrection
a rising up again(st)
the old order
the old odor
whose fatigued rank and (de)file army-crawls
spreading the stench of massacre
through a blood-bloated field
where birds of pray rise
riding writhing winds
into an edgeless sky.
