Stars

My son, who has a budding interest in astrophysics, has been learning about black holes and stars. The other day he relayed what he had found out about the black hole in our own galaxy, superstars, and theories about the origins of the largest black hole discovered (to date).

I won’t say I carried my side of this conversation, LOL. But, thanks to a couple poems I wrote within the last few years, I had read enough about stars and black holes to follow what my son was saying. One of the poems was “Event Horizon,” the titular poem of my second book. The other is a poem called “Stars,” which will be in my upcoming book Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. “Stars” uses the basic physics of how a star functions as an analogy for spiritual life.

Stars*

Flame and light
slow-motion whip crack
into crown points
around fusion’s crucible

immolation
dancing
on gravity’s
grasping fingertips

* “…shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life” (Php. 2:15-16).
